As treatment must happen in specialised medical centres, and can last a long
time, families who live considerable distances from these facilities face
the problem of finding a place to stay while their children are undergoing
treatment. The "CHOC Houses" aim to provide accommodation for children who may otherwise be hospitalised for many months. As some of the therapies weaken immune systems, these children require an environment which minimises the risk of infections. An increasing number of child cancer sufferers in South Africa live in adverse environments and it is important to house them in a facility during peroids where their immune systems are most vulnerable. CHOC has established a "home-from-home" for parents of children undergoing treatment at the several of Hospitals. Currently there is the "CHOC House" in Saxonwold, Johannesburg for the Johannesburg General Hospital; "CHOC Lodge" at the Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape; "CHOC Block" at the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban; the Danone Clover CHOC House in Bloemfontein, and now the Danone Clover CHOC House in Diepkloof, Soweto serving the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. A Danone Clover CHOC House will be opened in Cape Town in late 2006. For more details of these houses, follow these links: Saxonwold (Jhb); Tygerberg (Cape Town); Durban; Bloemfontein; Soweto (Jhb). Parents and their children are provided with accommodation on the recommendation of the medical specialists at the relevant treatment centres. Each case is assessed on its own merits, with priority being given to the most needy parents and children. Sponsorship: The running of these important facilities is an expensive operation, and we welcome sponsorship from individuals of companies towards the costs. Please contact the relevant local Division. See the contacts page. |
