CHOC Appeal Letter 2015

Through your generous support - as an individual or corporate donor; volunteer; external fundraiser; affinity partner or alliance member - you have helped to ensure that CHOC provides holistic support for each child with cancer or a life-threatening blood disorder, and their families, so that all children are able to access and adhere to treatment and are supported through the long and ardous journey.

As 2015 comes to an end, let's take a moment to see what you have made possible:

Children and teenagers supported.

Caregivers and family members supported.

CHOC accommodation facilities close to treatment centres.

30, 000+

Bed-nights provided for children and caregivers, who would otherwise have nowhere to stay during certain treatment phases.

2, 500

Health professionals, home-based care-workers, traditional healers and community members trained on the early warning signs since 2011.

17.17 %

Growth in bed nights since our awareness campaign began, indicating that more children are being diagnosed and accessing specialist treatment.

7, 700

Psychosocial support beneficiaries – CHOC has a team of five social and two social auxiliary workers, based full-time in the paediatric oncology units.

8, 500

Recipients of transport and transport funds; practical support such as food parcels and bereavement support; access to support groups.

1, 100

Volunteers, including 300 who do activities with children in the wards.

Our Annual Review and audited financial statements will be up on the
CHOC website soon. Please visit to view or download.

“When I grow up I would like to become a CEO of a company that will be leading in my own generation. I know that I can, that's only if I study hard. I love helping the poor and people in need. I also want to help hospitals and places like CHOC because of all the good work they are doing. It's not about the money, it's about helping each other.”

(Currently Mahlatsi is being treated for cancer.
He lost both of his parents and is in his grandmother's care.)

“We appreciate the love and care we have received at the CHOC House. I would like to thank those who built the CHOC houses and those that assist with donations of food and other things. We really appreciate the warm rooms. If there was no CHOC I wonder where we would be today. I would like to thank the CHOC management and all the CHOC employees.”

Sindy Hlophe

“We thank God that there are people like you, who became family and saw them as they walked some dark valleys, you stood in our place and we can only ask God to continue blessing you and the whole CHOC fraternity.
Proverbs 25:11b – He who waters others will himself be watered. We'll continue praying for all those who are still walking and those who will walk this journey.”

Blessings, David Bulafu
(Father of a survivor)

“Our son Caleb made use of your facilities at the CHOC house in Plumstead in 2006 and 2007. We are especially grateful as we are from Durban and the CHOC house was a safe and caring environment where he could recover. The service you provide is simply invaluable and thank-you's seem so inadequate.”

CEO Letter

Now and again it is good to remind ourselves of the real reason we do things. Why do we as CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation exist, what is our purpose?

When asked, some CHOC staff and supporters would refer to our mission statement: “Supporting children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders and their families; improving early detection and facilitating effective treatment.” That would be a very good answer but, again, why do we support children with cancer and their families? Others may respond that we provide accommodation or refer to some of our other services. But why do we provide these? There are key reasons why we - the whole CHOC community of staff and supporters – do what we do.

As the only nationwide organisation that provides essential practical and financial support, we ensure that no child is precluded from accessing, or adhering to treatment, which can last from months to three years, and even longer. By providing psychosocial and emotional support, by helping relieve the financial burden and by providing practical support we can make this arduous journey for the child and family easier.

By providing training and education nationally on the early warning signs of childhood cancer more children are diagnosed, and at earlier stages, which greatly increases their chances of survival and reduces morbidity. Thus, in short, our purpose is to save young lives, to make the journey for children with cancer and their loved ones an easier one, and to be sure that no child, parent or loved one ever makes this journey alone.

Our core purpose is to relieve the stress and trauma of childhood cancer and save lives.

But CHOC cannot do this without your support. We hope that our loyal supporters will continue to walk this path with us. And if you haven't supported us yet this is a time to demonstrate care and compassion. Act now to help relieve the stress and burden of children and families undergoing the trauma of childhood cancer and help CHOC to save lives.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated by every child, parent and loved one that can be supported though our programmes.

Best regards and a blessed festive season to you!
