This year’s Maritzburg SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge, took place around Alexandra Park in the capital city on Sunday, August 20. An expected field of 4,500 runners/walkers took part over the 10km and 5km distances along the same routes as the last two years. The start starts alongside Maritzburg College’s main rugby field, Goldstones, in Princess Margaret Drive, ending at The Oval cricket stadium, with both the 10km and 5km races beginning simultaneously at 8.00am.
Spar Parklands has a strong association with CHOC. The TOPS at Parklane Wine Festival brings the finest selection of wine from some of South Africa’s premier wine estates to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands for an evening of fine wine tasting. This annual event is a must on the Pietermaritzburg social calendar and whilst the focus is on sampling, promoting and selling wine, CHOC Pietermaritzburg is a worthy beneficiary.
Granny Griffs has a quaint restaurant close to the golf course in Virginia. Having lost her husband to cancer, She was motivated to knit beanies and scarves for children with cancer. She gets her customers involved in this project and all of the items are added to the CHOC care bags which are given to children at the wards and the CHOC Lodge.
In 2010, Joy de Witt’s wife, mom and grandma decided to organise a walk for CHOC after attending a CHOC tea. The Choc walk in Sani Pass made perfect sense because Joy’s family had a family home up in the berg. In 2010 there were 80 walkers and now in 2017 the Choc Sani Pass walk had over 450 walkers of all ages.
The CHOC 7 aside tournament is an annual CHOC event that started in 2014. Since then it has turned into a major sporting fundraising event that targets companies who have soccer teams.
Thank You so much to our dedicated volunteers that come in the ward every week to do activities with the children. CHOC is still in need of more volunteers and please contact us on details below if you are interested or know anyone that would be.
