Sarah Kruger, aged13, won R1 000 in prize money and chose to donate it to CHOC as the organisation had supported her little cousin during her liver cancer treatment as a baby. The letter below was read out by Sarah at her school assembly and it encapsulated the unbreakable bond between the two cousins.
Last year, I won the Daily Dispatch Local Young Heroes Award and was awarded a cheque of R1 000 to donate to a charity of my choice.
The reason I have chosen CHOC as my charity is for reasons close to home. In 2012 my cousin, Catherine, was diagnosed with a tumour on her liver. The tumour took over 90% of her organ; it was so large that it was pushing against her heart causing her to have trouble breathing, as well as having a swollen tummy – at only 3 months old.
The doctors in East London did as much as they could, we were told that our little angel would not be coming home and we had to say our goodbyes as she was referred to Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.
CHOC were absolutely amazing with their help and support. We had volunteers visiting our family and explain the proceedings that would follow once Catherine reached Cape Town. They even organised accommodation and their help was unbelievable. Without CHOC and their support we would all have fallen apart.
Thanks to the doctors in Cape Town, as well as Dr Pienaar from East London, Catherine is now a happy and healthy 5 year old who attends preschool. We as a family are forever grateful to CHOC for all they did for us and for what they continue to do for so many precious children. Thank you to all at CHOC who give love and of themselves so unconditionally and selflessly.”
