This year has started with a bang for CHOC Northern Region and the team is committed to enhancing the current programmes. Our core programmes are there to offer support to the children and their families as well as the paediatric oncology staff in the hospitals. We furthermore aim to raise awareness for childhood cancer and educate communities on the early warning signs of childhood cancer.
A new addition to the Northern Region newsletter, is an interesting article written by one of our paediatric oncologist, Professor David Reynders. This quarter article focuses on what cancer is and what types of cancers do children get.
My highlight for this edition is the Have a Heart For Children With Cancer, CHOC’s annual national campaign, which coincides with International Childhood Cancer Day on the 15th February. The aim of the campaign is to increase awareness about childhood cancer and to promote the importance of early detection through CHOC’s early detection awareness training.
This year even the Voortrekker Monument changed its colours to blue in support of ICCD 2017. A big thank you to the team from the Voortrekker Monument and our City’s Speaker, Councillor Katlego Mathebe and MMC for Health, Mr. Sakkie du Plooy for their kind support of this important campaign. I would like to encourage you to listen to an interview we had on Lekker FM with Dr Ane Buchner, Paediatric Oncologist and Belinda Austin, a survivor. See below.
Being a not for profit making organisation, support from our wider community is crucial to maintain our core programmes and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that assisted and supported us in the past and present by offering us your time through volunteering, purchasing and wearing the ICCD badges, attending our events, offering gifts in kind, contributing financial support by monthly or once off debit order or donations. This year we are also proud to announce our partnership with the Vodacom Blue Bulls .Together we keep more than hope alive.
We are truly privileged to be part of our little hero’s journeys and I thank you for the support.
Till the next time,
