CHOC is very dependent on the support of volunteers for both the children and their families. We have the following volunteer programmes:
CAREGIVERS
Caregiver volunteers are mostly hospital-based and interact with children and parents through various activities. This progamme runs mostly during the week and volunteers need to be available during this time.
There is a Young Adult Volunteer Programme in the Johannesburg Division that is for adults in their twenties and thirties to interact and play with children over the weekends. There is also the opportunity to interact and play with children at some of our CHOC Houses.
Caregiver volunteering is subject to an intensive selection, training, orientation and supervision process and recruitment is done on a needs basis.
ARTS & CRAFTS PROGRAMME
In some of our divisions arts and crafts programmes are available to teach parents new practical skills such as needlework, arts and crafts, baking, etc. in the CHOC Houses. Volunteers can support existing programmes or possibly initiate such programmes in partnership with management in the divisions.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Parents who have been through childhood cancer and wish to give back can volunteer to serve on a CHOC Divisional Committee and offer their skills and professional expertise.
FUNDRAISING SUPPORT
As a fundraising support volunteer, you would assist in any fundraising events, promotions and awareness programmes.
S.O.L.I.D.
S.O.L.I.D. (Survivors of Life-Threatening Illnesses and Diseases) is a volunteer group run by and for long-term survivors of childhood cancer. Click here to read more about S.O.L.I.D.
STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
Many secondary and tertiary students are expected to complete community service. Depending on CHOC’s needs, the student’s time and commitment might be used in a variety of ways. Opportunities are limited.
Availability in the different categories of volunteering depends on the specific need of the Division where you reside. Should you be interested, you are welcome to contact the divisional office nearest to you for further information
